Chapter 18: Blood Lust

Hateful Harry’s foot slammed into Shane’s gut. Shane let out a groan and exhaled sharply as he doubled over. He was in the hallway now, just outside the red bedroom. He tried to scramble to his feet, but the ghost knocked him over once more, landing a kick this time in the small of Shane’s back.

“You’re a real ass, you know that?” Shane muttered.

“Still with a smart mouth?” Harry asked. “I’ll beat that out of ye soon enough.”

Another kick took Shane in the side of the face, and he spun in the other direction. He landed hard on the wooden floor and spat a mouthful of blood, and he had to shake his head to clear it.

“I think I’m gonna take off your legs and arms and beat you to death with them. How’s that sound?” Harry asked, leaning down into Shane’s face. The ghost slapped his cheek and grinned.

“I think,” Shane began, “you’re going to have a lot of trouble making good on that promise.”

His fist made contact with the ghost’s jaw, knuckles aligned perfectly with the jawbone. He couldn’t have asked for a better angle.

Harry reeled back, and Shane got to his feet, wiping blood from his mouth and nose while he watched the ghost stagger, awkwardly grasping at his face and trying to fix the damage.

A living person would have been in agony from such a severe break on the jaw. The ghost struggled to speak, producing guttural noises. Though the words were unintelligible, the furious sentiment was clear.

Shane punched the ghost again, this time on the opposite side of the head, forcing the jaw back almost in place. Harry growled and stumbled, bending low to grab his face.

The ghost retreated and Shane followed him, returning to the bedroom where they had started. He was angry now, and Harry was going to bear the brunt of it. He was angry at the ghost for being so cocky, and angry at Hempstead for being a pain in the ass. He was angry at James for getting him into the mess and angry at himself for not realizing how dangerous it could be.

And mostly, he was angry at the faceless group that existed out in the world—not foolish collectors and arrogant hobbyists, but a group who trafficked in secrets and knew far more about who Shane was than it had a right to.

“Ye—” the ghost began with much effort, raising his face to meet Shane. However, he was unable to finish his sentence as Shane placed his fingers in his mouth.

Shane clenched as hard as he could, squeezing Harry’s chin and teeth and pulling with one hand as he pushed against the ghost’s neck with the other.

Hateful Harry wailed in pain. The spirit flesh tore and ligaments separated. Shane pulled the entire mandible off of Harry’s skull and hurled it behind him. It vanished, evaporating like smoke before it hit the wall.

The tongue in Harry’s mouth hung loose, exposed now, and torn open. His teeth were visible, as was the gaping chasm of his throat.
